PLASTIC FURNITURE IN POST-WAR BELGIUM

This paper discusses the production of plastic furniture in post-war Belgium. Plastics were commonly used to imitate wood order mass-produce traditional popular styles. provoked strong reactions from industry protecting their trade, and modernists, who rejected “dishonest” use materials. The Meurop company was established 1958 with a policy offer good design at affordable prices. Targeting new European market, developed its own distribution system shops that covered Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands, France, Germany. In 1960, it first Belgian open plastics department, designing fabricating modern designs created by art director, later, in-house studio. Later, as result 1973 oil crisis different attitude plastics, Meurop’s dream ended had close doors 1980.
